Fighting Identity Theft One File at a Time, with Senator Sabini

Over 100 residents of Jackson Heights had their confidential and personal papers shredded at a community event organized by Senator John D. Sabini (D/I-Jackson Heights) last Saturday. As a member of the Senate’s Consumer Protection Committee, Senator Sabini organized the event to help local residents protect themselves against identity theft.

A large mobile paper shredder destroying hundreds of pages in just minutes was deployed on 37th Avenue. Attendees watched as their financial records were shredded on site. Personal paper shredders may be expensive and often malfunction, but the mobile shredder provided free, foolproof service.

Over three tons of paper were shredded at the event, which is the equivalent of saving 54 trees, because the shredded paper was then recycled.

“Keeping important documents that contain personal information such as social security numbers, bank statements and other financial forms may put you at risk of identity theft,” Senator Sabini said. “Identity theft strikes thousands of New Yorkers every year, but steps can be taken to make it less likely that you are victimized. This event was a way to make sure the valuable documents of my constituents never fall into the wrong hands.”

Due in part to the rise of the Internet, identity theft is the fastest-growing crime in the United States. Senator Sabini is very concerned with helping New Yorkers prevent this crime.

“Over $56 billion was reported stolen from identity theft victims across the country in 2006, and much of this could be prevented,” Senator Sabini said. “Shredding your personal papers is an easy way to reduce the chances you are victimized.”
