Car owners in Western Queens are invited to protect their automobiles and receive a free Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etching, sponsored by the 13th Senatorial District and the 110th Police Precinct.
The event will occur in the St. Leo’s School parking lot at 104-19 49th Ave. from 5-7 p.m. on August 21.
Cars are stolen mostly for resale or resale of their parts. Once a car has been etched, the doors and windshield of the automobile will have less value, and it will be a much less appealing target to thieves. Many thieves would rather pass on a VIN-etched vehicle and target one that has not been etched.
Performed by New York Police Department Crime Prevention officers, VIN etching is a chemical process that permanently etches the VIN onto all glass windows of your car. This process deters theft, helps identity parts in salvage yards, and can lower insurance costs.
If stolen, a car with a VIN etching is much more likely to be recovered, as etched parts can be identified in junkyards. Auto theft in New York City has been on the decline for years, in large part due to police action and personal responsibility.
