Western Queens residents are invited to shred their personal and confidential files in a large mobile paper shredder on August 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jackson Heights Shopping Center at 31st Avenue and 77th Street, sponsored by the 13th Senatorial District.
Attendees can watch their papers shredded by a mobile shredder provided by ProShred Security. The shredder can destroy thousands of pages in just minutes.
Keeping important documents that contain personal information such as social security numbers, bank statements and other financial forms may put consumers at risk of identity theft. Identity theft strikes thousands of New Yorkers every year, but steps can be taken to make it less likely that you are victimized.
While other forms of larceny are on the decline in New York City, identity theft is the fastest-growing crime in the United States, due in large part to the rise of the Internet. Shredding documents at this event is an easy, free way to protect yourself.
Over $56 billion was reported stolen from identity theft victims across the country in 2006, and experts believe much of this could be prevented.
The event is part of the 13th Senatorial District’s ongoing effort to bring government services directly to constituents. For more information, call the 13th Senatorial District at 718-639-8469.
